Application of Phytic acid in cosmetics

2021 11/19

The chemical name of phytic acid is phytic acid, that is, cyclohexanol hexaphosphate. The phosphorus content can reach 50% to 80%. It is a mixture of inositol phosphates, including inositol diphosphate, inositol triphosphate, inositol tetraphosphate, inositol pentaphosphate, inositol hexaphosphate sub-formula of C6H18O24P6, molecular weight 660.08

Phytic acid is widely used in cosmetics, toothpaste, anti-dandruff shampoo and so on. It can also adjust the PH value and complex metal ions. Many foreign products like salicylic acid, but salicylic acid will change color when it encounters iron ions. If EDTA is added, the PH value is too low, and there is basically no chelating ability. Therefore, phytic acid is generally added.

The anti-oxidation and anti-free radical effects of phytic acid are due to a specific function of the chelating properties of phytic acid. Most oxidation processes in nature require metal ions (mainly iron ions) as catalysts. This microscopic process produces highly active free radicals with strong oxidation performance; after complexing with iron ions, it can reduce the generation of free radicals and slow down the oxidation reaction. Seeds are not easy to rot and deteriorate because of the antioxidant effect of phytate. Phytic acid is commonly used as a fresh-keeping agent in the food industry to prevent food from decay and deterioration by the same mechanism.
The application of phytic acid in the cosmetics industry has received more and more attention in recent years. In addition to strong complexation, phytic acid also has mild keratolytic action. Gentle keratin peeling is very meaningful for both skin and hair. Compared to other keratin peels (if acid), phytic acid is much milder under the same pH conditions.
Phytic acid can inhibit the tyrosinase that produces dark spots on the skin, has the effects of removing dark spots, rejuvenating and whitening, and has a good effect on treating acne, acne, and improving skin tone. At the same time, it can strengthen blood circulation and promote the growth of hair and nails. Therefore, in the manufacture of cosmetics, for example, adding phytic acid to skin creams can inhibit the darkening of the skin caused by tyrosinase, thereby achieving a whitening effect. Adding phytic acid to the shampoo can effectively prevent the formation of dandruff, and has antibacterial and anti-itch effects, making the hair soft and shiny.
